Spencer Whitney is a journalist and photographer based in Oakland, serving as the Digital Editor for KQED News. He has previously held editorial positions at the Oakland Post and San Francisco Chronicle. Spencer completed his undergraduate studies at Howard University and earned his Master’s in Journalism from UC Berkeley. Before earning a Master’s degree, he volunteered at San Quentin Prison weekly to help produce content for the monthly news publication San Quentin News. This included working with inmates and giving them one-on-one feedback on how to improve their stories as well as collaborating with other reporters to research recidivism rates in San Quentin State Prison.
