The Ubuntu Leadership Institute (ULI) nurtures leadership, resilience, professional readiness, and empowers young Black men to understand their potential and their purpose.
Designed for young men ages 16–22, fellows are paired with intergenerational mentors to navigate the many nuances of life. The skillbuilding and cultural education empower participants to thrive academically, personally, and professionally. Participants engage in intensive cohorts that include backpacking trips, land-based education, professional development workshops, and mentorship from leaders and guest presenters. These experiences cultivate confidence, teamwork, and a deep sense of identity rooted in African-centered values.
Every participant graduates with a professional portfolio, including a polished resume, personal statement, community service records, and a professional headshot. Beyond skill-building in public speaking and interview techniques, ULI offers backpacking trips and immersive international study abroad experiences—with recent cohorts exploring the rich histories of South Africa and Colombia—to learn and build community throughout the Diaspora.
Following the fellowship, one young man launched a catering business after program participation, while another navigated the foster care system to pursue college and entrepreneurial ventures.
"ULI has helped me become more disciplined and think more about my future. It pushed me to carry myself like a leader and stay focused on my goals." — Larry Darnell
"Being a part of ULI impacted me in a good way by helping me grow into a more focused and confident person." — Sir'Vontae Dixon, ULI Fellow '26
